Foreign advisors explored study opportunities at BUT

On Monday, 19 May, Brno University of Technology (BUT) welcomed a group of foreign secondary school counsellors from nine countries to its faculties. The event, organised by the Czech National Agency for International Education and Research in cooperation with the BUT's Marketing Department, aimed to establish closer relations with the counsellors and present BUT as an attractive option for secondary school students from America, Europe and Africa interested in studying abroad. The intention is also to develop long-term cooperation that will lead to the recruitment of high-quality and motivated students for bachelor's degree programmes in English at BUT.

A group of twelve secondary school counsellors arrived in Brno at the invitation of the Czech National Agency for International Education and Research. They represented countries such as Georgia, Switzerland, South Africa, Ghana, the United States, Taiwan, Great Britain, Italy and Germany. As part of their tour of Czech universities, they visited Masaryk University and Brno university of Technology.

The advisors expressed interest in information about technical education opportunities at BUT and began their programme with a tour of several selected faculties. At the Faculty of Civil Engineering (FCE), the visitors were welcomed by Vice-Dean Zdeněk Dufek. During the tour of the faculty, visitors had the opportunity to see, among other things, the student zone and a unique GNSS station located on the roof of the faculty, which is used for teaching and research projects in the field of geodynamics in Central Europe and GPS meteorology. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication (FEEC) prepared a tour of the library, study room, lecture hall and laboratories with commentary by Vice-Dean Stanislav Klusáček and the participation of teaching staff. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME) also showed foreign advisors its premises, including a chill-out zone, lecture halls and laboratories, with commentary by Vice-Dean Radek Kalousek and the participation of teachers. Here, the delegation was joined by foreign students of FME's bachelor's programme.

The morning programme culminated in a presentation on Brno University of Technology led by Vít Chlebovský, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Business and Management (FBM). This was followed by an open discussion during which the advisors inquired about the number of foreign students, admission requirements and tuition fees. They also appreciated the opportunity to meet foreign students in person and to have lunch at the university canteen.

In the evening, the counsellors attended University Fair, where they had the opportunity to meet representatives of the Faculty of Architecture (FA) and the study department of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication (FEEC) and obtain more detailed information about studying and admission requirements at these faculties.

Brno as an attractive place to study

The programme concluded with an evening tour of the centre of Brno, led by Radek Toman, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Architecture. His expert commentary focused on the period of development of functionalist architecture. Participants visited several important buildings representing this architectural style, and during the tour, the significance of architect Bohuslav Fuchs was also highlighted. The Faculty of Architecture in Brno is currently commemorating the 130th anniversary of his birth with a project featuring a pneumatic sculpture of Fuchs' Glory.

Brno is attractive to foreign students not only because of its high-quality education and unique architecture, but also because of its friendly atmosphere, good accessibility and distinctive student character. In the international ranking QS Best Student Cities, it regularly ranks among the fifty best cities in the world for studying.

VUT was one of the stops on a several-day tour of the Czech Republic. During their trip to Moravia, the advisors also visited Masaryk University and Palacký University in Olomouc.

The number of foreign students at BUT is growing

Interest in studying at BUT among foreign students is growing. This year, a total of 2 900 applicants from 120 countries enrolled in our English-taught programmes. The university has been working long-term to expand its international network of contacts and raise awareness of the quality of technical education in Brno.

"Attracting high-quality foreign students to full-degree study programmes is the goal of every university with international ambitions – especially if they come from countries such as the USA, Taiwan, Great Britain or Switzerland. Cooperation with secondary school counsellors from these and other countries is one of the tools with high potential for achieving this goal," emphasised Sylwia Říhošková, international marketing specialist and event coordinator for BUT.

In the future, BUT aims not only to increase the number of enrolled foreign students, but above all to attract motivated students who want to not only study in the Czech Republic, but also work here afterwards, whether in research and development or in local technology companies, many of which are located in close proximity to the university on the premises of the Brno Technology Park. Cooperation with secondary school counsellors is key in this regard.
