The publication České spotřební pohádky was awarded the Golden Ribbon 2025

Titles published under the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Brno University of Technology have recently achieved several successes! The publication by Pavel Ryška České spotřební pohádky won the Golden Ribbon Award 2025 at the end of May. The book stood out among 240 submitted publications, specifically in the literary section in the category Theory and Criticism of Literature (Art) for Children and Youth.

Kniha České spotřební pohádky. | Author: Nakladatelství FaVU

The book České spotřební pohádky is a guide to a century-long history of folk and artificial fairy tales in the service of the consumer industry. It tells stories about knights who saved kingdoms with magical soap, princesses freed from spells by the scent of doughnuts fried in margarine, poor girls who became queens thanks to their ability to prepare the most delicious rye coffee, or brave warriors hidden in every bottle of Karotela. Illustrated cards, leaflets, and small booklets were published both by private companies in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and by state enterprises in socialist Czechoslovakia. These colorful prints fascinated children, even though they offered only condensed versions of classic tales or naïve texts tailored to specific products, which directly replaced traditional magical items in the stories.

Author Pavel Ryška teaches at the Faculty of Fine Arts at BUT, where he focuses on the history of Czechoslovak visual culture, the history of animated film, and comics. He is also the author of monographs Pioneers and Robots and Caricaturists.

The annual Golden Ribbon Award is granted each year to creators of the best children’s and youth books published in the Czech language. It has existed for over 30 years and represents the only award in the Czech Republic exclusively dedicated to children's literature. The award is announced by the Czech section of IBBY – the Society of Friends of Books for Youth – with co-organizers including the Children’s Book Illustrators Club, the Translators’ Guild, the National Pedagogical Museum and Library of J. A. Comenius, and the Museum of Czech Literature.

Other books from the FaVU publishing house have also received recognition, such as Obrazy jiné touhy, nominated in the competition for the Most Beautiful Czech Books of the Year 2024, or the book Háček + Čárka, which won the Muriel Award 2024 for its contribution to Czech comics.
